For the love of reading
It’s true. I LOVE
to read. I devour books, especially in the summer. One of my most frequented websites is www.goodreads.com so I can store my
ever-growing list of “to-read” books. I’m excited entering another school year to
have the opportunity to pass on my love for reading to 3rd grade
students.
Recently, I’ve
been collecting quotes about reading for my classroom walls. I’ve managed to
find way more than I need so now I’m wading through the excess. But this
morning I paused and sat down to reread all the ones I had found so far. A few of them:
“We
read to know we are not alone.”
- C.S. Lewis
“You're
the same today as you'll be in five years except for the people you meet and
the books you read.”
- Charlie "Tremendous" Jones
“A
man is known by the books he reads.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
“The
more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more
places you'll go.”
- Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!"
Then I went back
and read them again. But this time, with
an entirely different perspective. This
time, reading the quotes thinking not about just reading any book, but reading
God’s Word. And just look what came to
mind…
CS Lewis quote:
“And surely I
(Jesus) am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20
“The Lord will
guide you always.” Isaiah 58:11
Charles Jones
quote:
Every time I open
God’s word I can find something new. Sometimes it is conviction. Sometimes an
encouragement. A promise. Or perhaps even a question that causes me to linger
and converse with God. But admittedly,
the Bible changes me. Thankfully!
Emerson quote:
AHHHHH! “To be known by the books we read.”
My translation: To
be known by the Bible…
What a purpose to
read God’s Word…that others may know God as they know me.
And then there is
Dr. Seuss:
Perhaps my
favorite thought this morning.
“Oh the places we
will go…” when thinking of the adventure of reading the Bible. The ultimate place it leads us…
Right to the
throne of God.
